Why Andong Is Korea's Cultural Capital: A Complete Travel Guide

Why Visit Andong?
While much of South Korea is known for its modern cities, high-speed trains, and rapidly changing skylines, the historic city of Andong offers something completely different.
Here, centuries-old villages, Confucian academies, and traditional festivals remain part of everyday life.
In May, the team at Dullekorea traveled to Andong in the North Gyeongsang Province to experience this side of Korea firsthand.
For a city like Andong, one of its biggest attractions is the number of UNESCO World Heritage sites located throughout the area, as well as how well these cultural sites have been preserved.
While many parts of Korea have experienced rapid urbanization and industrial development, Andong has managed to maintain much of its traditional landscape, architecture, and cultural identity.
Among Koreans, Andong is a familiar destination, especially for students who often visit the city on school field trips. It is widely known as a place where visitors can learn about Korean history, traditional architecture, and Confucian culture.
However, for those who did not grow up in Korea, visiting Andong provides a very different experience.
Andong Hahoe Folk Village: Korea's Living UNESCO Heritage
The name Hahoe (하회) means “the river turning around.” It comes from the way the Nakdong River curves around the village, creating a natural boundary that surrounds it.
Initially on our trip we visited the old trail route that leads into the village from the hills.
The trail would have had some significance to the society and economy in the Joseon Dynasty but currently serves as a way to escape into nature.
Walking through Andong Hahoe Folk Village feels like stepping back in time.
Traditional wooden houses with weathered stone walls sit beneath rolling green hills, creating a landscape that has changed remarkably little over the centuries.
For a moment, it feels less like visiting a tourist attraction and more like wandering through a living museum.
Actually the village is not simply a recreated historical site. People still live here, running small businesses and continuing everyday life within the village.
The last thing I expected while sipping a cold cup of sikhae in the afternoon sun was to see an elderly couple taking a leisurely walk as their golden puppy wandered happily beside them completely unconcerned by the large tour group that would soon pass them by.
To that extent, Hahoe has also safeguarded traditions that have been passed down for generations.
Among the most celebrated is the Hahoe Mask Dance, a satirical folk performance that remains one of Andong's defining cultural traditions.

It’s also where traditions and cultural practices have continued. This connection to the past is one of the reasons why Hahoe Folk Village has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Dating back hundreds of years, the performances used humor and exaggerated masked characters as satire towards the societal issues and tales of ordinary life.
The play includes ridicule of depraved monks, satires about nobles, and other humorous content.
Although the theater dialogue is performed in Korean, the experience is welcoming for international visitors.
Large screens positioned beside the stage provide translations in several languages, making it easy to follow the story and jokes. It was a thoughtful addition that allowed the performance to retain its authenticity while remaining accessible to visitors from around the world.
